Two quotes guide my life. One is William James' adage, "Effort is the measure of a man." The other, a quotation from Nietzsche: "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger." Both of these sound a little macho, but they're a pretty good way to put things in perspective when not everything is going perfectly in your life. And they're a great motivator to try doing great things, even if you know you might not succeed.
I won the Truman Scholarship when I was an undergrad, and plan on using the money to pay for a doctoral program in political science that I'm starting next fall. Of course, I haven't gotten into one of them yet, so if none of them take me, I might be forced to run away from Washington and do something radical, like building alternative energy systems in Montana. In my spare time, you might find me on the weights in Washington Sports Club or on the water with Capital Rowing Club.
Why narrow things down here? I am looking for someone to share both the serious and lighter sides of life with me. Someone who is willing to see the world for what it is, and not only what they'd like it to be. Someone who observes that life is animated by the beauty of physical as well as mental activities.
