An octonagerian who thinks he's 35
(well, maybe 45)
Every morning I wake up ready to tackle that mug of Folgers before I plunge into my jakuuzi for a few minutes' splashing around. Then it's time to consult my appointment book for my day's activities, while enjoying my usual Breakfast of Champions and absorbing the day's review of the usual violence that passes for news on TV these days. Sure glad to live in the peaceful precinct of Suburbia with little more than the sounds of birds in the trees or the occasional Harley rumbling past. (I used to ride until my motorcycle died a couple years ago and I quit fixing it.)\ I retired about 22 years ago after 38 years of college teaching, and never looked back, nor been bored for a minute except when washing dishes or such. I've been a widower for 6 years and don't enjoy living alone with just my cat for companionship. So I'm on the lookout for a female to share my life with. I consort with plenty of female friends, but haven't convinced any of them to give up the single life. (Some of them tried marriage with unsatisfactory results.) My marriage lasted almost 50 years and we never got tired of each other. I grew up in Iowa but, after a spate of varied employment (civilian and military) and a good dose of academia leading to a Ph.D.from the U. of Michigan, I took a position in the Forestry Department at Michigan Tech, Houghton, where I remained until retirement. My interests include membership in a Masonic Lodge, Order of Eastern Star, a Shriner, travel, dancing and other socializing, politics (conservative) keeping fit with walking, srationary bike riding, yoga, bowling. yard work, and regular exercises. I also enjoy cooking -- spaghetti, heating wieners or brats in water, microwaving frozen meals, baking frozen pizza, etc. I also fix a tossed salad nearly every day. I spe
My life has consisted mostly of "coping". I was never an outstanding student in grade school, high school or college. When in college I became a staff member of the student newspaper, although I was not a Journalism major. During my junior year, I was appointed to the newspaper editorial board, given the choice Student Government beat, made acting managing editor for several weeks, and given a weekly humor column which made me one of the best-known students on campus. After graduation I obtained a job as editor of a weekly newspaper. When drafted into the Army, I was designated "writer" and assigned to the General Headquarters. Far East Command, in Tokyo, Japan, with rank of Corporal. After returning to civilian life and securing a Master's Degree, I obtained a college teaching position due to a friendship between my major professor and the dean of the school having the opening. Soon I learned that, to keep my position, I must obtain a Ph.D. Degree. I made friends with prominent faculty members in the school I proposed to enter, and completed the doctoral requirements after seven years of study and research in addition to my own teaching work. I was a classic "overachiever" whose success far exceeded the early potential I had shown. .
My preference for a soul mate is generally flexible. She should be intelligent, agreeable and reasonably attractive, healthy and without any chronic problems that would impair her life. If she has children, they should be healthy and unimpaired in any way. If she has parents or siblings, these must not be a burden. Personal cleanliness is imperative. She should enjoy travelling, but not by air (Flying is for the birds.) She should be a reasonably good cook and housekeeper. If she is not already an Eastern Star member, I would encourage her to join. She should not be a TV "junkie" or a political leftist. She should be prudent with finances. She should enjoy sexual intimacy. She should not smoke and avoid over indulgence in alcoholic drinks. In religion she should be a reasonably active Protestant.
