Not long ago, scientists discovered the smallest planet yet identified outside our solar system. It was orbiting around a small star in the constellation Sagittarius.

Scientists had been using a technique called radial velocity to find planets outside our solar system. Radial velocity looks for the wobble these planets cause when they orbit their stars.

But when the scientists changed the way they looked for planets, they discovered a whole new world (or at least a small new planet).

Instead of using radial velocity to search the galaxy, they focused on a stellar phenomenon called galactic microlensing. Microlensing occurs when the light from a distant star is bent and magnified by the gravitational field of a closer star.

"There's a very subtle effect, a spike, and that's what we're looking for," said Stephen Kane, a postdoctoral associate in the University of Florida's astronomy department.

By looking for the spike of light instead of the actual planet, scientists have been able to find planets that were previously hidden from sight.

Love works much the same way.
