It's that time of year when things get hot and stay hot. That time of year when the temperature stays up long after the sun goes down. That time of year when you can work up a sweat just by sitting still. So, what's a sun-scorched single to do?

Simple. Whip up some cool summer drinks for you and your friends – or better yet, for you and that one special someone you'd like to get to know better.

All you need is some fresh fruit, a selection of fruit juices, ice, of course, and, if you're mixing up the alcoholic versions, your favorite liquors. Add a few friends (or just one special one). Shake well and chill (out).

Not a whiz behind the bar? Don't know you're way around a blender? Don't fret. Here are some cool summer cocktail recipes – both alcoholic and non – that'll cool things off and heat them up at the same time.

Sex On The Beach

  • 1 oz. vodka (For a non-alcoholic version, replace the vodka and the peach schnapps with peach or guava nectar.)
  • ¾ oz. peach schnapps
  • Cranberry juice
  • Grapefruit juice
  • Pineapple slices or lime wedges for garnish
  • Ice (for straining, optional)

Mix vodka and peach schnapps together. Add equal amounts of cranberry juice and grapefruit juice, and strain through ice (optional). Pour into highball glass and garnish with fruit.

Pina Colada

  • 1-1/4 oz. rum (Omit for a non-alcoholic version.)
  • A good splash each of Cream of Coconut and pineapple juice
  • Pineapple slices and/or maraschino cherries for garnish
  • Ice

Mix together rum, Cream of Coconut and pineapple juice and pour into a glass. Garnish with pineapple slice and/or cherry.

Seabreeze

  • 1-1/2 oz. vodka (Omit for a non-alcoholic version.)
  • 4 oz. cranberry juice
  • 1 oz. grapefruit juice
  • Lime wedges for garnish
  • Ice

Pour vodka over ice into a highball glass. Add juices and garnish with a lime wedge.

Some people sip them through a straw. Some grab them by the glass. But no matter how you enjoy them, these cool summer drinks are the perfect answer to hot summer nights.

Mix them with your favorite friends for an evening pool party. Or better yet, plan a late-day picnic for two, put on some surf guitar music, bring out a beach blanket – and bingo – you're in for a TRUE summer of love.
