Chick flick. Tearjerker. Girly movie.
There are many different names for heart-wrenchingly tragic dramas about star-crossed lovers. Most girls out there probably prefer to watch those alone — you know, just you, some Twizzlers and your blotchy, tear-streaked face.
But for a mixed crowd, or just you and your hunky, manly boyfriend, try these fun films that have a little something for everyone. By the end of it, your guy may even be ready to admit that he kinda likes the mushy stuff. But even if he doesn’t, these movies are hysterical, and everyone knows that laughter is the best aphrodisiac of all.
This campy flick features Ben Stiller as Ted, a loveable albeit unlucky guy who sets out in search of his high school crush. But when the private detective he hires to track her down falls in love with Mary himself (after all, there is just something about her), Ted finds himself in one unbelievably disastrous situation after another. Cameron Diaz is adorable as dream girl Mary, and Matt Dillon is fantastically shifty as private eye Pat Healy. And it goes without saying that Ben Stiller does the hapless, embarrassed good guy like nobody’s business.
An intense story of an unknown medieval squire turned jousting champion, ingeniously set to rock classics (think Kiss and David Bowie). William, our squire (played by the freckle-nosed Heath Ledger), meets up with one Geoffrey Chaucer on the road to a joust. Chaucer forges papers (a side business to keep him going until he can get down to writing "The Canterbury Tales"), proving that William is of sufficient nobility to enter the competitions. Between jousts and swordfights, William takes up with a motley crew of friends, also managing to fall in love with a noble woman whose heart he must fight for amid the social prejudices of his day. Chaucer’s sharp wit is fantastically on-point.
Another Ben Stiller movie that never fails. Stiller plays Greg Focker (the most unfortunate last name in movie history) opposite Robert DeNiro’s brilliant and sidesplitting performance as Jack Burns, Greg’s future father-in-law. When Greg and his girlfriend Pam visit her parents for a weekend wedding, everything that could conceivably go wrong for Greg does. It all starts when the airline loses his luggage which, although unfortunate, isn’t that big a deal. But it’s not long before Greg accidentally breaks the urn containing Jack’s mother’s ashes, and the next day gives Pam’s sister, the bride, a bloody nose during an enthusiastic game of water volleyball. The laughs literally don’t stop. The best part? If you want more, there’s "Meet the Fockers."
Kate Hudson turns in an ultracute (even for her) performance as Andie Anderson, a writer for a top women’s magazine who’s writing a story about all the things women do in relationships that drive men away. What’s more, Andie decides she’s going to test her theories on a real-live guinea pig, advertising executive Benjamin Barry, played by Matthew McConaughey. (For some women, the fact that Mr. McConaughey appears in this movie will be reason enough to watch.) What Andie doesn’t know is that Ben has a plan of his own! If he can make Andie fall in love with him in 10 days, thereby proving he knows what women want, his coworkers have agreed to give him the big diamond account his firm has recently acquired. Their hidden motives naturally create a hysterical standoff, with Andie doing everything in her power to drive Ben crazy, while he refuses to break things off. A great film about the differences between men and women, and the fact that all they really want, in the end, is each other.
