Way back in 1993, an African researcher named Charles Foley heard a story about a white giraffe that roamed a national park in Tanzania.

Like Captain Ahab, Foley searched and searched for the great white animal. Ahab found Moby Dick. And Foley, after a dozen years of searching, found his white giraffe in 2005.

He found it almost by accident, while he was flying over the park counting the elephant population for the Wildlife Conservation Society. He saw a flash of white out of the corner of his eye.

“I looked … blinked … looked again … and it was still there,” said Foley, who had his pilot fly back over the area so he could take a photo. You can see it on the Wildlife Conservation Society's website.

1. Don’t give up: what you're looking for — or who — is out there. Keep that person in your mind’s eye, and just keep looking. Wink, chat, send a conversation starter. One day, soon, you’ll see a photo out of the corner of your eye that will be your white giraffe.
2. A photo is a powerful convincer. Without a picture of his white giraffe, who would have believed Charles Foley?
