Men see you in search results, and if your photo isn’t good, they’ll scroll right past you.
You should upload several photos. Statistics show you’re 23 times more likely to be seen by other members if you do. Only one photo – usually the first one you upload – will be selected by Customer Care to be the main headshot that shows up in search results. The rest will be your private photos.
Your headshot needs to be a straight-on, close-up look at your face. Your private photos can show your hobbies, your pets, your sunglasses and your hats. But your main photo needs to focus on two things: your eyes and your smile.
DO
LOOK STRAIGHT AT THE CAMERA – no angled shots, no side profiles.
WHY: Men want to look into your eyes to judge whether they’re interested. Side profiles and angle shots don’t let them do that.
SMILE
WHY: Even if you believe serious is your best look, men want to see that you are friendly. Looking serious says “I have no sense of humor.”
WEAR A NICE SHIRT
WHY: When men click through and view your profile, your shirt will show. Men don’t want to see you in a dirty T-shirt . Dress like you would for a first date.
USE A CURRENT PICTURE
WHY: Older photos look out-of-date, and they say “I don’t like how I look now.”
USE A WELL-LIT PHOTO
WHY: Photos that are too dark show up grainy and people won’t know how you look. Photos that have too much light make you look kind of sick. Don’t know what the right light is? Have your picture taken outside. Natural light is almost always more flattering – just don’t shoot at high noon (because you’ll be in a shadow).
IDENTIFY YOURSELF IN A GROUP PHOTO
WHY: We need to know whose face to put on your profile for search results. If more than one person is in the photo, tell us “I’m second from the left” or “I’m the one in the yellow shirt.” Otherwise, your best friend’s face could become your headshot.
MAKE SURE PHOTO DIMENSIONS ARE AT LEAST 100 X 100 PIXELS
WHY: Photos with dimensions smaller than 100 x 100 pixels have to be enlarged to fit in search results, making them blurry and unusable. The help section of your image software will tell you your photo’s size. (It’s usually listed under “photo size” or “attributes.”) Anything 100 x 100 or larger is fine.
CONSIDER USING A REGULAR CAMERA
WHY: Many cell phone pictures don’t contain enough data to be used as a main headshot – they won’t meet the 100 x 100 pixel rule. Webcam pictures usually come out making you look a little green, because of the reflection from the computer screen. Instead, use a regular digital camera, or if you don’t have one, buy a disposable at the store and get the final prints delivered on a CD, so they’re already digital.
DON’T
NO HATS
WHY: No matter how hip you think you look, don’t wear a hat. Men want to see how you look. Hats also cast a shadow on your whole face. Save your hats for your private photos.
NO SUNGLASSES
WHY: Pictures with sunglasses get moved down in the search results. Men need to be able to see your eyes. Save your sunglasses for your private photos.
NO NUDITY
WHY: Men who don’t know you might not be ready to see you without a shirt on. If you want to post a racier photo, post it as your second or third choice – that way it appears in your private photos.
NO DEAD ANIMALS
WHY: You might be the greatest huntress or fisherwoman in the world, but save it for your private photos. You don’t want men to associate your face with the phrase “dead fish” or “deer in the headlights.”
NO GUNS
WHY: Bottom line – this can scare a lot of men off. Save it for private photos.
NO LIQUOR
WHY: A picture of you with cocktail in hand says “lush.” Men have no way of knowing that you were at a special celebration or holding it for a friend.
NO HANDS NEAR YOUR FACE
WHY: Men want to see your face, not your hands. Trying to be cool by flashing signs tells men you don’t think they’ll like you for yourself.
NO KIDS IN YOUR PHOTOS
WHY: Photos need to be about you, and besides we encourage all members to keep photos of children off the Internet, for their sake.
NO CUTOUTS
WHY: When you cut yourself out of an old photo, the result looks odd and artificial.
NO PHOTOS TAKEN INTO A MIRROR
WHY: These almost always come out blurry, with you looking away from the camera, or overly lit, because of the flash.
NO SITTING TOO CLOSE TO THE WEBCAM
WHY: Webcam pictures usually come out making you look a little green, because of the reflection from the computer screen. You can fix this somewhat by backing away from the webcam, but a better idea is to shoot a picture with a different camera.
